What is Internet TV ?Internet TV refers to the delivery of television content (video and audio) over the internet broadband connection. This content can be shows that you already receive over your satellite or cable connection. The TV Networks, (CBS, ABC, NBC), are already making their prime time shows (Lost, Desperate Housewives, The Daily Show) available over the internet. This television content can also be non-professional videos or videos from niche content producers who can't break through the broadcast networks control over the airwaves. Google has already indexed and hosts thousands of home made videos. Custom programming is springing up all over the web. Television news broadcasts from around the world can be found redistributed over the net. Why Should I Care About Internet TV ?Remember when the web first burst on the scene. It literally transformed the publishing industry. Today, anyone can have a website or blog and publish what they want. Millions of websites, blogs and forums today provide a voice to everyone and anyone. Newspapers and magazines haven't gone away. But I don't read the newspapers now and I'm better informed today than I was before. Bookstores and books haven't gone away. But when I need to find a book I turn to the web. Now, I read more ebooks than non-fiction books. I also read more out-of-print books than new books. And when I do read a new book, its probably from an obscure author found on a recommendation from cyberspace. That all started over 10 years ago with html and the text based internet. Now, we are rapidly moving towards a video based internet. This will have monumental impact on entertainment, communications and ecommerce. Imagine entire libraries of vintage tv shows and old movies available for immediate download. Imagine documentary and niche producers creating videos about obscure topics that were not economical for traditional tv but now can reach a small but passionate audience. Imagine the power of internet video to teach, communicate, entertain and to sell. Imagine the business opportunities. New companies, new industries and new skill sets that will be required. Imagine real time video reporting from anyone on the street, caught up in news worthy events. Imagine what you can do with Internet TV. Uncertainty and Opportunity with Internet TVTelevision and newspaper ad revenues are decreasing while internet advertising continues to grow quarter after quarter. Television viewing habits are changing with Tivo, DVRs and timeshifting where we are already watching tv on our schedules. Now, Internet TV offers the possibility to truly watch what we want to watch when we want to. A lo carte programming can be a possibility. But with this incredible to technology shift there will be plenty of uncertainty and opportunity as business models rise and fall and major industries dive into the pool. Small, innovate companies will take advantage of market opportunities but time will tell if they survive to become tomorrow's business leaders.
